About the session and the diaconate |
|
Our church council is called the session
The session is the council of our church. It includes ruling elders and the pastor, and the pastor presides over the meetings.
“The session is the council for the congregation. It shall be composed of those persons elected by the congregation to active service as ruling elders, together with all installed pastors and associate pastors.
”The session shall have responsibility for governing the congregation and guiding its witness to the sovereign activity of God in the world, so that the congregation is and becomes a community of faith, hope, love and witness.”
— Book of Order, G-3.0201
Deacons pray, listen, lend helping hands to the flock
The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Individuals of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies and sound judgment should be chosen for this office.
It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.
They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session, such as leading the people in worship through prayers of intercession, reading the Scriptures, presenting the gifts of the people and assisting with the Lord’s Supper.
