12th Sunday after Pentecost
|
Dear Swift Church family,
This week in worship is going to be a little bit different. I am writing to tell you a little about these changes. Our precious Jenni will not be with us. She will be recovering from surgery that was done Friday. It is likely that we will not have her with us for the next couple of weeks as she heals. We have moved to the sanctuary for this Sunday and possibly the next Sunday to better accommodate us as we worship with music differently this week. Our Blessing of the Backpacks will also take place and the sanctuary is better suited for that as well.
We will miss Jenni as she takes the time she needs to get well. Please keep Jenni in your prayers. We look forward to her return.
Worship will go on! I can not say enough good things about this congregation. When there is a need, people show up. I want to give a special “thank you” to Mary McNair and Marvin King who saw the need to provide music for this Sunday and simply made it happen. We did not have to change a single hymn. Instrumental accompaniment music will be played through YouTube over the sound system. Worship will go on!
So friends, I hope you will join us for worship on Sunday in the sanctuary as we bless backpacks and celebrate the beginning of another school year with ice cream following the service.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Alexandra

►Vernon Andy Anderson, missionary memorial display | |
Bibanga, Belgian Congo, Africa
Vernon Anderson was born in Chicago on Aug. 23, 1896. When he was 12 years old, his parents and siblings moved to Miflin, Alabama, where they attended Swift Presbyterian Church. When Vernon was 18, he left home to attend the Alabama Presbyterian College and the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His graduate work was at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, where he earned his doctorate degree. He did not return home for eight years as he was working on his degrees. While in Kentucky in 1920, he met and married Laura Mulford Stafford. The earliest letters available are dated from the 1920s. He and Laura left for the Belgian Congo in December 1920.
Dr. Anderson has been supported by Swift Church throughout his 40 years in Africa as today Presbyterian missionaries to the Congo are supported by the congregation.
The Jensen family has gathered and is contributing to Swift Church: memorabilia, artifacts from Africa, letters, photos, newspaper articles, Vernon’s thesis, and the family album for members to view in the church library.
